Korea Veterans - Tasmania

This page . . . . .  .   . . . . . will provide you with information on the activities of Korea Veterans  in Tasmania.

Those unfamiliar with Australian geography will be able to locate Tasmania on the following map.

Where it all started!!

The first idea of a "get together" came from a meeting of this group. And the "get together" resulted in the formation of Korea Veterans Tasmania.

(L. to R) M. Rayner, M. Wheeler, C. Bonney, T. Williams,

R. Patterson, J. Green.

The photo was taken on J. Green's front fence in Launceston. (1991) Rex Patterson is the only surviving member, the other Veterans having passed away from war-caused injuries and complaints occasioned by the Korean War.

CLICK HERE AND HERE (there are two pages!!) to read, and perhaps to down-load, a copy of the original hand-written minutes of the first meeting of Korea Veterans Tasmania - written by "Chum" Clarke (deceased 09-04-1995) our previous historian.

The names of the 22 Tasmanians, who paid the supreme sacrifice in the Korean War 1950 - 1956 are listed below – I do this because I believe every name, and every person attached to that name, deserves to be remembered  -   I know you all feel the same way.

Condolence:

On behalf of the members of Korea Veterans Tasmania, I extend our sincere sympathy to Dennis, Anita, Pam, and their families on the death of the Late Owen Henry Latimer who passed away on 1st September 2011 at the age of 80 years. He served in Korea for 356 days from 3rd April 1952 to 24th March 1953 with 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment with the rank of Lance-Corporal. His service number was 6400058 and Corps, Royal Australian Infantry. He was born in Wynyard, Tasmania, on 3rd March 1931 and will be sadly missed from our ranks.

Included in the special guard of honour provided by ex-servicemen and women, were seven Korea Veterans Tasmania members., representing the south, north, and northwest areas. Ed. Ray

To all Korean War Veterans:

The Minister for Korean Affairs, the Honourable Warren Snowdon MP, has sent the following message for all Korean War veterans.

There will be a special tour to Korea for seven days surrounding the 24th October this year 2011.

If you would like to take part in this tour, please send in your postal details (and email address if any) to me as quickly as possible, and I will send you the Application forms, preferably by email, otherwise by post. Nominations must be on this form, and include biographical details that will facilitate the selection process.  The final decision will be made by the end of August by the Dept of Veteran Affairs, so quick action is necessary.

This will be a fairly demanding tour, both physically and emotionally. While the itinerary will take account of mobility and age, it will still be quite demanding with activities and events each day requiring a degree of physical endurance.

Physical requirements are that the veteran must be:
Ø  Physically independent to the extent that they can climb and descend stairs unaided,
Ø  Walk distances of up to 500 metres (including on uneven ground) without tiring,
Ø  Climb in and out of vehicles and aircraft without difficulty.
Ø  Limited medical support will be available on the visit, but there will be no provision for individual carers.

Applicants are required to have detailed medical assessments, the details of which are laid out on the Application Forms which will be sent to anyone wishing to be considered for this tour.  Nominees who are short-listed will be required to undergo additional medical assessment before their names are put forward to the Minister for selection.  The final decision on fitness to take part in the visit will be made by the Department’s Principal Medical Adviser.

While there are strict criteria for acceptance to this tour, the Department will arrange all travel, accommodation and meals, and passports (where necessary) for visit participants. Some items of clothing will be provided to be worn at ceremonies and functions during the visit.  All nominees must accept a number of conditions before acceptance.
These are,
Ø  To accept twin share accommodation;
Ø  To travel at all times with the visit party, and remain with the visit party for the entire duration of the visit (ie from the departure from Australia to return to Australia);
Ø  To take part in media interviews arranged by the Department, if requested to do so, before, during and after the visit. (Departmental support will be provided for any such interviews.)
Ø  No family members will accompany the mission.

Any further queries may be answered by Mr Stuart Watson, on 02 6289 6210 or freecall 1800 026 185.
Applications, on the prescribed form, are to be sent to the Department, PO Box 9998, Canberra, ACT 2601 (marked for the attention of Mr Stuart Watson.)

General:

Due to much hard work by the Ladies Auxiliary of Funds Raising (with assistance from Government and Local Government Councils), we are now fortunate to have venues (Parks) established in each region. These provide excellent venues for an annual Barbecues "get together", that produces a great feeling as it also brings together family groups from all over Tasmania as well as visiting Veterans. These three Park areas have commemorative plaques which were officially dedicated during appropriate ceremonies.

On Saturday 12th April 2003 a Memorial Dedication Service was held at the Anglesea Barracks, Hobart,  when the then Governor of Tasmania, His Excellency the Honourable Sir Guy Green, AC, KBE., unveiled a new memorial commemorating the Korea War 1950 - 56.

The 6 ft. obelisk design monument is sited in the Anglesea Barracks Memorial Garden and Gun Park, in the corner bounded by, the Hospital Grounds and Royal Hobart Bowls Club.

Attention is drawn to the fact that Anglesea Barracks in Hobart , is the oldest established and continually used Barracks in Australia, and Fort Direction at the mouth of the Derwent River (an ideal week-end Barracks with all facilities). Their use is granted to Korea Veterans on an annual basis by the Army Commander of that year, currently Lt. Colonel Julian Heath. Fort Direction has a beautiful , quiet and clean beach, a boat launch ramp and cliff walks which look out over Bruny Island and Storm Bay - and with a clear view towards the Antarctic. This venue has been a Fort since the Boer War and historically has been used to develop Cadet Corps and C.M.F. Junior Leaders' skills in all stages of development and training. It is essential that these important areas, already established, should not be sold or closed down. Also it is a premier heritage site with the 1833 guardhouse, the 1814 military hospital, the 1846 stone military prison, the 1824 field officers' married quarters, the original 1820 barracks, the two storied stone 1850 barracks and the 1833 soldiers' taproom.
